The African American community is grossly underrepresented at 2% of the workforce in STEM/STEAM career fields. With higher occurrences of inadequate educational development in STEM/STEAM within underrepresented communities, and the lack of professional resources to address the disparity leads to graduating only 22% of African American college students on a four-year plan attaining a degree in engineering based on studies by the American Society for Engineering Education. The community is in real danger of being "left behind", even with over 1 million STEM jobs open over the next decade per the U.S. Department of Labor. If this trend is not confronted, many detrimental social and financial implications will continue to plague the African American community as technology is quickly becoming the new economic revolution.
